A Special Birthday Tribute to Joy Youngs – 100 Years Old

On 10th December 2024, the Royal British Legion Rushden Branch was thrilled to celebrate the remarkable 100th birthday of Joy Youngs, a cherished member whose life has been defined by service, dedication, and love. Joy's journey has been one of remarkable achievements, from her time as a Naval Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Nurse during World War II to her later role as a St John and Red Cross Service Hospital Welfare Officer.

A Legacy of Service:

Joy served as a VAD Nurse from 1942 to 1946, contributing to the war effort in vital ways. Her compassion and dedication didn't stop there—after the war, she continued her work in healthcare, becoming a St John and Red Cross Welfare Officer, where she continued to care for others in the community.

Her service to her country and community is not the only thing that defines her, however. Joy's story is also one of enduring love and devotion. She has been happily married to David, a former Regular Army soldier, for 73 years. David, who is four years younger than Joy, has always proudly claimed his status as the "toy boy" of the relationship! The couple fondly recalls the early days of their courtship, when soldiers had to seek permission from their Commanding Officer to marry. The Colonel's memorable response, "No, it won't last," clearly didn't account for the lasting strength of their love, which has now endured over seven decades.

A Life Full of Adventure and Creativity:

Joy's passion for life extends beyond her work and marriage. Throughout her life, she has loved staying active, playing tennis, horse-riding, swimming, and traveling the world. A talented artist, Joy also has a love for tapestry and embroidery. She created a 1940s-themed tapestry to mark the new millennium, which is now proudly displayed in Rushden Hall, a lasting testament to her creative talent.

Celebrating 100 Years:

On this very special occasion, Joy received numerous heartfelt tributes, including a congratulatory birthday card from Their Majesties The King and Queen. The Royal British Legion Rushden Branch presented Joy with a potted patio plant and a special birthday cake to celebrate her milestone, and she was joined by RBL Committee Member Sally Morton, who was also part of the festivities.

A Lifetime of Impact:

Joy's 100 years have been filled with a lifetime of impact on her family, community, and country. Her service, dedication, and love for life continues to inspire all who know her.
